Gangaur Brata, Context: Kolkata – A Comprehensive Discussion

ABSTRACT
The people of India celebrate various types of ritualistic ceremonies. Most of the rituals are related with women and their domestic lifestyle. In the folk culture of India, the women of this country have created their own world. This world is constructed by their emotions, desires, expectances and their imaginations. They observe many vows and ceremonial rites for worshiping their gods and goddesses and for fulfilling their earthly desires and altruistic wishes. ‘Gangour’ is considerd as one of the biggest, colourful, traditional and retualiatic festivals of Marwari community and others in Rajasthan. Even wherever they have migrated, they have carried their tradition and culture. In West Bengal, specially in Kolkata and around the city, Gangour festival is celebrated by local Marwaris with a splendid manner. Every year, before the time of Gangour, the artisans of Kumartuli are engaged themselves for creating the clay images of God ‘Isar’, Goddess ‘Gora’ and others related with the occation. It has a great significance and importance in the field of folk art and culture. In this paper, the researcher tried to showcase a clear vision of this particular vow and gave an analytical discussion on it. This paper also concentrated on the role of local artists of Kumartuli and their creations in the context of this festival. there is a comparative discussion between Gangour and the other rituals and vows of Bengal, observed by the Bengali women.
