The Concept of Moksha in Nyaya-Vaisheshika Philosophy: A Discussion
Rojina Khatun, Research Scholar, University of Burdwan, Bardhaman, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
The concept of libration exists in almost all religions in its own unique way. The word libration can be used meaningfully in many religions. Monotheistic religions say that the barrier between man and God is sin. Monotheistic religions define libration as entering into eternal communion with God, which means that personality will not be extinguished but rather will be fulfilled. Other Eastern religions, such as Buddhism and Taoism, embrace moksha as an enlightenment, meaning discovering oneself and coming into harmony with an eternal system that governs existence. Dualistic religions hold that two opposing forces of good and evil govern our world, viewing libration as a return to a primordial angelic state from which humans have fallen into a physical body. An important sect in Indian philosophy is Nyaya-Vaisheshika. Nyaya-Vaisheshika is a theistic philosophy, while Charvaka, Buddhism, Jainism are atheistic sects. Theistic sects believe in the Vedas. They believe that the world was created by God from atoms. he Nyaya-Vaisheshika sect is an ancient sect, at least as old as Buddhism. The first and main work of Nyaya was received from Maharishi Gautama and he is said to be the first founder of this sect. Later, various commentators such as Vatsyayana, Udyotakara, Prasathapada, Vishwanatha, Gangesha, etc. wrote commentaries on the Nyaya and Vaisheshika Sutras. These two schools are considered similar because they believe in the infinity of atoms, which are the material cause of the universe. They believe that there are many ultimate theories rather than just one. The primary purpose of this paper is to discuss the Nyaya-Vaisheshika school's view on how humans can attain Moksha or libration.
