ABSTRACT | ||
“Mangalkavya” is one of the important texts in medieval literature. Apart from Persian literature,
this is also an indispensable source for constructing the early-medieval and medieval history. This
literature gives us a clear idea about the “Society”, “Economy” and “Gender Relations” in
Medieval Bengal. Different scholars defined these cultural texts in various manners. Some
complementary to each other whereas some contradict each other. Whatever the explanation
of the mangal poems, it is significant part of the oral and the written traditions. The previous works
regarding “Mangalkavya”, deal with literary expression of it and the greatness of deities. But the
main concern of this article is to differentiate the food habits of Bengali people on the basis of
Chandimangal Kavya. Kabikankan Mukundaram composed the text of “Candimangalkavya”
around late sixteenth century. “Candimangalkavya” constructed the story of “Chandi” and
“Kalketu-Fullara” and “Dhanapati-Khullana-Lahana”. After that, Dwija Madhab and Manik
Dutta also focused on the protagonist characters of Chandimangal Kavya. From this article, I want
to explain the diversity of Bengali Cuisine from regional perspectives. Not only that, but this article
also wants to address different economic class on the behalf of food habits using Nidya (hunter’s
wife) and Khullana (Merchant wife). Furthermore, tries to explain the food culture of rich and poor
people within the same class with the change in economic condition. Keywords: Chandimangal kavya, Food habits, Bengali Cuisine, Economic conditions, Rich and
Poor. |
