The Terracotta Villages of Antpur and Dharhatta Arindam Gayan, Assistant Professor, Department of History, Netaji Subhas Ashram Mahavidyalaya, Purulia, West Bengal, India | ||
ABSTRACT | ||
Antpur and Dwarhatta are two famous terracotta villages in the Hooghly district of the Indian
state of West Bengal. These two villages are the part of Burdwan division. Not only our India
but also the world knows the name of Antpur for its unique terracotta tradition. There are
numerous terracotta temples here, the most notable of which is the temple of Radha-GovindJiu Mata. This temple was once the seat of religious culture. One of the most notable
attractions here is the assimilation of terracotta of burnt clay and terracotta of wood carpentry
simultaneously. In addition to the Radha-Govind-Jiu temple, there are five other Shiva
temples, and there are Chandimandap, Natmandir, Nahabatkhana and Dwarikachandi Mata
Mandir and Sri Sri Rajarajeshwar Mandir in Dwarhatta. Many tourists, devotees and
foreigners come to see the temple. Antpur boasts of to possess a bokal tree which is about 400
years old. There is Ramakrishna Math and Premananda Ashram here. Swami Vivekananda
and his nine brothers took sannyas here. Mother Sarada Devi stayed in the house of Swami
Premananda. Durgapujo of Ramakrishna Math is very famous. Although it is a village by
