ABSTRACT | ||
‘Mrigaaya’ Volume I was published in the last decade of the 20th century. However, novelist Bhagirath Mishra has not confined himself to contemporary times alone. His storytelling brings forth a history spanning two hundred years. The journey of the discussed novel begins in 1793, when the seeds of the Permanent Settlement were sown in this country, and it concludes temporarily with the Zamindari Abolition Act (1953) and the Land Reform Policy (1955). The author presents a vast picture of how feudal society gradually fell into the clutches of capitalism and later, how feudalism and capitalism rooted themselves in society. Along with this, many characters, who expanded their thoughts with time and eventually vanished on the gallows of another era, have emerged in the narrative. Through his writing, the novelist has depicted a grand testament of the emotions and sentiments associated with feudalism on one hand, and on the vast canvas of the novel, on the other hand, he has portrayed a living image of class disparity. Additionally, the novel reflects various aspects of rural life, such as folk sayings, folklore, folk culture, folk beliefs, and folk tales. Key words: Epic Novel, Zamindari, Feudalism and capitalism, Class disparity. |
