The Problem of Evil in Rabindranath’s Philosophy and the Attempt to Overcome It: An Alternative Analysis
Dr. Atasi Mahapatra, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Philosophy, Shahid Matangini Hazra Government General Degree College for Women, Purba Medinipur, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
The problem of evil is an important issue in Philosophy as well as Theology. Atheists present such a problem against theists, the main point being that if God is perfectly good, then he must be willing to destroy evil; And if He is omnipotent, He will be able to destroy evil. But evil exists in the world. Evil is considered a problem only for those theists who believe in the existence of an all-powerful, omniscient and all-merciful God and also accept evil in the world. Indeed, the reconciliation of evil with an all-powerful and benevolent God is a religious and moral problem for theists. In modern times, some poet like philosophers have discussed evil. They have wanted to feel the evil through the perception and feelings of their hearts. Although the existence of evil was recognized in the literary world, it was not presented as a philosophical problem. Rabindranath Tagore also discussed the nature of evil and its significance in the world. The problem of evil in Tagore's philosophy is not expressed in this particular form. He said, evil has a real existence. Evil in human life becomes real evil only when it is experienced from the point of view of egoism. Abandoning this partial vision and accepting evil in the vision of the whole, the problem of evil is eliminated. This essay tries to discuss the problem of evil and its solution in the philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore.
