Kant and Hume on the Universality of Moral Judgments: A Comparative Discussion
Rabiul shaikh, Research Scholar, Dept. of Philosophy, Vidyasagar University, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
British moral philosopher R. M. Hare and critical German philosopher Immanuel Kant were influential figures in moral philosophy.  In this paper, a comparative discussion will be made about the universalizability of their moral concepts.  It is clear, however, that both of them gained reputations as moral philosophers in their time.  Both have important contributions to the concept of universalizability of moral judgment.  But Kant and Hare did not discuss universalizability in the same context.  So comparing two such great philosophers is a very difficult task, yet comparing their philosophical thought will surely be interesting and useful.  This paper will attempt to show how Hare's principle of universalizability of moral judgment can be compared with Kant's categorical imperative.  It will also be shown that Hare's principle of universalizability of moral judgment is a refinement of Kant's concept of universalizability of moral judgment.
