Moral Dilemma in the Context of the Mahabharata- A Review Chandrima Maity, Independent Researcher, Kolkata, West Bengal, India | ||
ABSTRACT | ||
From the starting point of Philosophy, two opposite theories are discussed parallelly, just as two parallel lines on a railway track run side by side for an infinite distance; but they never meet. The discussion of contradicting theories like Materialism-Idealism, Rationalism-Empiricism, Monism-Dualism, Consequentialism-Deontology, Egoism-Altruism are the most preferable examples of the philosophical debates. In ethics, as in metaphysics and epistemology, various such contradicting theories are found. But one of the most complicated discussion is between ethical principles and moral dilemmas. Moral dilemmas are an unsolved problem in ethics. Genuine moral dilemmas are like self-contradictions where the universal ethical principles cannot be implemented. Although in Indian epics and literature, some solutions are provided by Indian thinkers, which is the main discussion of this article. Keyword: Philosophical debate, Ethical principle, Moral Dilemmas, Self-contradiction, Indian epics, solution. |
