Mrs. Saraju Pal, Research Scholar, Sona Devi University, Ghatshila, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, India
ABSTRACT
Jhargram is one of the most diverse districts of West Bengal, India. Dense forests surrounded by greenery and small and big hills, rivers, waterfalls have made the natural beauty here pleasant and visually appealing. The pristine beauty of Jhargram district, surrounded by saal, mahua and palash, is a matter of pride and admiration for the people of West Bengal and the whole of India. Most of the people living in Jhargram district speak Bengali, but many people aalso speak Santal, Kurmali, Mundari and other languages. So, their religious rituals are different. The caste Hindu community worships mythological deities while the indigenous people worship folk and village deities. Being a border area between the states of Odisha and Jharkhand, it has a mixed culture. The indigenous and tribal people here have their own festivals, songs and dances which are very rich and colourful. Karam Parab, the worship of Nature and Trees, is one of the most attractive folk festivals of Jhargram. It’s a harvest-centric or creation festival dedicated to the deity Karam. Young people belonging to various tribal and agrarian communities celebrate this Karam festival in different rituals on Shukla Ekadashi Tithi of Bhadra month through Karam song and dance and pray to nature for good harvest and prosperity. Through the various regional dances and songs performed during this festival, aspects of love for nature, brotherly love, and the suffering, hardship and deprivation of rural women are vividly revealed.
