English Language Communication Skills of Higher Secondary Level Students in Bangladesh: A Survey
Dr. Meejanur Rahman Miju, Associate Professor, Institute of Education and Research, University of Chittagong, Bangladesh
ABSTRACT
English communicative competence is vital for higher secondary students in Bangladesh, since they prepare for tertiary education and career opportunity at this level, This qualitative study investigates the current status of English communicative competence among higher secondary students in Bangladesh, focusing on real practice skills, classroom dynamics, and stakeholder perspective. Data were collected through classroom observations in ten colleges and semi-structured interviews with 50 students, 10 teachers and selected guardians. Observational checklists and thematic analysis guided the research inquiry. The findings reveal a notable gap between students’ theoretical knowledge and their practical communicative ability. Most classrooms were dominated by teacher-centered instruction and traditional lecture approaches, offering limited opportunities for students to engage in authentic speaking and listening practice. Psychological factors such as anxiety and lack of confidence frequently inhibited verbal participation. Teachers identified challenges including large class sizes and insufficient training, while guardians reported limited capacity to facilitate English practice at home. To bridge the competence gap, this study advocates curriculum reforms emphasizing communicative language teaching, comprehensive professional development for educators, and increased community and parental involvement. Such interventions are essential for fostering the communicating ability that higher secondary students need in Bangladesh.
